Which Opener Is Right For Me? | Garage Doors Dallas GA

Jan 20, 2016 4:13:53 PM

Just by glancing quickly through a catalog or driving around in Dallas, GA, it is easy to see that there are a variety of garage door styles that one can choose from. However, did you know that there are also a lot of great openers? When deciding on the best garage door opener in Dallas, GA for your needs, there are a few things to think about, such as the size and weight of your door as well as what it’s made of. In addition, take note of what is around your garage. In other words, how loud can you afford to have the opener be? Here are some more specific considerations:

The Drive System

  • Screw Drive

Screw Drive systems do not have belts, chains, or gears. They are particularly powerful compared to other types of drives because they don’t have as many parts. They simply have one long rod - like a screw - to open and close the door. Still, they are best for one-car garages or garage doors that are on the lighter side. Screw Drives are fairly durable, however some maintenance is necessary. The most important thing to remember is to grease the system every few months so no part of it wears down. In terms of noise level, Screw Drive systems lie somewhere in the middle - quieter than chain drives but louder than belt drives.

  • Chain Drive

As the name suggests, Chain Drive systems use a chain made of metal to open and close garage doors. Chain Drives are the most popular of all garage door opener drive systems and are very durable, so they can be used for garage doors of just about any weight. Chain Drive systems are also the most affordable. Their main drawback is that they are the noisiest of the garage door drive systems. However, if you are not concerned about noise, or if you garage is far away from where you primarily spend your time, then the noise of Chain Drives may not be a problem for you.

  • Belt Drive

The final major garage door opener drive is called the Belt Drive. Belt Drives are known for their relative lack of noise, because they operate using a rubber (or similar material) belt to open and close garage doors. Since many people in Dallas, GA, prefer a garage door opener that does not create as much noise, Belt Drives are becoming increasingly popular. Fortunately for many, they are able to lift very heavy doors. As with the other types of drives, with adequate maintenance, Belt Drives typically last for a while.

Horsepower

GARAGE_DOOR_OPENERS.pngOnce you have reviewed the Drive System options, it is time to evaluate how much horsepower your opener will need. How large is your garage door? How much does it weigh? How quickly would you like it to be able to open?

  • 1/2 HP

Half horsepower is the most common speed for garage door openers. (The drive will of course also have an effect on the opener). Characteristics of your specific garage door, such as its material and whether or not it is insulated, may be reasons to consider a motor with more horsepower. Motors with more horsepower are more expensive, but typically last longer.

  • 3/4 HP

The next step above a 1/2 Horsepower motor is a 3/4 HP. If you have a large garage door made of wood or one with lots of insulation, then a 3/4 HP motor is something to consider.

  • 1 HP

1 HP motors are the most powerful, but only necessary for oversized or commercial doors. It is more than likely that your garage door opening and closing needs can be fulfilled with a 1/2 or 3/4 HP motor.

Safety

The greatest risk of a faulty garage door opener is the possibility of having the door close when objects (such as cars, tools, or even children) are in the way. No matter what opener you choose, make sure there are safety features installed that prevent the door from closing if there is anything in its path. It is also a good idea to make sure that, no matter how quickly the door opens, it closes somewhat slowly to prevent any injury or harm.
